How Can You Make the Most of Your University Years to Build a Successful Career?
This was the central question explored during the Alumni Talk organized as part of Groupe Supdeco Dakar’s Founders’ Month celebrations, known as Octobre Fondateur.
For this event, two of our alumni joined us to share their experiences with the next generation: Mohamed Sarr, a Marketing graduate of the Grande École Programme and Commercial and Marketing Director at Elton Oil Company, and Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Kébé, a graduate of the Higher Institute of Transport Studies and Project Portfolio Manager at the Operational Office for Project Coordination and Monitoring (BOCS).
Student Life: Much More Than Classes
Participation in student associations, taking on responsibilities during university, and building relationships on campus were among the key topics discussed.
According to both speakers, university life is about much more than classes and exams. It is also an opportunity to learn how to work as part of a team, take initiative, and develop valuable skills that will prove essential in the professional world.
“You should not wait until you enter the workforce to start developing your skills. Student associations, projects, and the responsibilities you take on during your studies are all opportunities to learn.”
Soft Skills: A Real Asset in the Job Market
Another key topic of discussion was soft skills. Communication, teamwork, discipline, adaptability, and a strong sense of responsibility are all qualities that can make a difference during recruitment and throughout one’s career.
The speakers also emphasized the importance of maintaining the right attitude, both in the academic environment and in the workplace: being curious, remaining open to advice, honoring commitments, and knowing how to seize opportunities.
Supdeco: An Education That Prepares Students for the Professional World
Reflecting on their years at Groupe Supdeco Dakar, Mohamed Sarr and Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Kébé shared memories and lessons drawn from their experiences. Their respective career paths illustrated the connections between academic training, the skills acquired during university, and the demands of the professional world.
Their message to students was simple: make the most of every learning opportunity, look beyond classroom instruction, and gradually build a profile that stands out.
The event also welcomed Samba Niass Diouf, Commercial Attaché at Elton Oil Company and a member of the alumni community.
The discussions provided students with practical guidance to help them make the most of their university years and prepare for their transition into professional life.
Groupe Supdeco Dakar would like to thank Mohamed Sarr, Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba Kébé, and Samba Niass Diouf for their time and valuable contributions to this event, as well as the students for their participation.
